에밀리 메이 스미스(Emily Mae Smith)는 1979년 미국 텍사스 오스틴 출생으로 현재 미국 뉴욕 브루클린을 기반으로 활동하고 있다. 에밀리 메이 스미스는 상징주의, 초현실주의, 팝 아트와 같은 현대 미술의 흐름에 발맞춰 사회적, 정치적 의도를 내재한 활발한 작품 활동을 하고 있다. 그녀의 상징과 기호 사전은 의인화된 빗자루 인형 아바타로 시작한다. 화가의 붓, 여성의 일과 관련된 가정용 도구와 남근을 동시에 언급하면서 스미스의 작품 전반에 걸쳐 끊임없이 모습이 변형되어 나타난다. 빗자루와 다른 상징들은 다양한 모양을 채택함으로써 성별, 성, 자본주의 그리고 폭력을 포함한 현대의 주제들에 대해 이야기한다.
